Shahbaz Sharif was elected as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan.

Shahbaz Sharif has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Pakistan. He was elected to this post by the majority of the members of the National Assembly of the country today after overcoming the great confusion about the Prime Ministership. PML-N President Shahbaz will take oath as Prime Minister today. Three weeks after the national elections, Pakistan finally managed to form a coalition government. Pakistani news agency Dawn has published this information.

The vote in the country’s parliament took place amid tight security after candidates backed by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan protested the election results and demanded his release. Shahbaz Sharif was elected as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan by getting 201 votes.

PTI candidate Omar Ayub Khan got 92 votes.

The Speaker summoned Sardar Ayaz Sadiq Shahbaz to the seat of House Leader. The newly elected Prime Minister is expected to address Parliament soon. Shahbaz hugged elder brother Nawaz Sharif after the Prime Minister’s announcement.

Shahbaz, 72, is the younger brother of former three-term prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif.

The PML-N and the Pakistan Peoples Party agreed to form a coalition government even though Imran-backed candidates won the majority of seats. After Nawaz Sharif stepped down, Shahbaz Sharif was able to be elected as Prime Minister.

During the national elections last February 8, internet connection was suspended in the country; Arrests and violence ensued and results were unusually delayed. Due to this, there were allegations that the vote was rigged.
